The Art of The Pivot
Pivoting is a muscle. It’s not quitting; it’s a deliberate repositioning. But the line between “giving up” and “growing up” can blur when stakes are high, egos are involved, and the data is messy. Learn to read the signals, apply a framework, and make choices that preserve momentum and integrity.
Define the Core Outcome, Not the Tactic
Giving up: You abandon the outcome as well as the tactic because the tactic was easier to change than your commitment.
Growing up: You preserve the outcome and change the tactic because evidence shows a better path.
Action: Write one sentence that defines the core outcome you care about (e.g., “profitably serve 100 enterprise customers” not “close 20 deals this quarter”). Test each option against that sentence.
Use Time-Boxed Experiments
Giving up: You stop without an experiment or deadlines, often after a single negative event.
Growing up: You run short, measurable experiments with clear hypotheses and pre-agreed success/failure criteria.
Action: Create a 4–8 week experiment with metrics, minimum viable investment, and a go/no-go decision point.
Measure with Leading and Lagging Indicators
Giving up: Decisions based on gut, mood, or a single lagging metric (e.g., sales last month).
Growing up: Decisions use a mix of leading indicators (engagement, conversion rates, pipeline velocity) and lagging outcomes (revenue, retention).
Action: Identify 2 leading and 2 lagging indicators tied to the core outcome. If leading indicators trend toward success, push forward; if both types fail, reassess.
Check Resource Allocation vs. Opportunity Cost
Giving up: You abandon because you’re tired or frustrated, not because you have made a good assessment of the situation
Growing up: Properly assessing the situation and deciding an alternate route to better get to your destination and goals.
Always remember, if God brought you to it, He has already devised the best route to get you through it. Pivoting is one of the most powerful weapons you will always have in your arsenal. Get God’s mindset on the situation! Then do the Pivot! You got this!!
